Film Review: ‘The Case of Hana and Alice’ Unusual toon technique transforms this low-key prequel to a 2004 Japanese favorite into a more internationally marketable anime-style outing. Hana and Alice are both tough, strong, and unafraid, though the movie begins with Hana hiding inside after a traumatic experience. It is subsequently a work that is admirable rather than engrossing, preferring to make gentle flirtations with real emotion instead of nailing its colours to the mast. Thanks to Alice's friendship, Hana is eventually able to come out of her house and live a mainstream life. The 2004 live-action film met with acclaim and gained a cult following in Japan.
